STARTING SALARY RANGE: $75,083 - $81,591 per year
POSITION: BUILDING INSPECTOR III

This is responsible technical work reviewing plans and inspecting building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and gas constructions, alterations, or repairs in accordance with codes, laws, and regulations. Employee must exercise sound technical judgment in multiple disciplines and use discretion in applying standard trade practices. Must perform plan reviews and inspections in at least two of the following disciplines: building, electrical, mechanical, or plumbing; with the ability to obtain certification in a third discipline within twelve (12) months of employment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of materials and methods used in building construction, alteration and repair, trade techniques, minimum housing standards, and state and local building codes.
- Thorough knowledge of construction inspections in at least two of the following disciplines: building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, or plan review.
- Ability to review permit applications and examine plans and specifications for code compliance within applicable specialty.
- Ability to conduct inspections; provide technical advice.
- Ability to recognize faulty construction, substandard materials, and hazardous conditions.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and codes; construction plans and blueprints; prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, engineers, and others in the construction trade; fellow employees, and the public.
- Ability to physically perform assigned duties.
- Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to lift, carry, pull, push, and maneuver materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Training, Certification, and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED preferably supplemented with advanced courses in a related field.
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Must possess State of Florida 'Standard' Inspector Certifications in at least two of the following disciplines: building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, or plans review, with the ability to obtain certification in a third discipline within twelve (12) months of employment.
- Five years combined experience in construction or a related field, building code inspection, or plans review related to corresponding certification category.
- Four years combined postsecondary and technical education experience in construction or a related field, including one year construction, building code inspection, or plans review experience.
- Or, an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements
Valid Florida driver’s license.
Ability to obtain standard licensing in at least one of the following disciplines: building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or plan review per F.S. 468 (prior to provisional license expiration).
