About This Role As a Technical Specialist I, you will perform:
Perform AutoCAD design and computer drafting and computational assignments. Analyze and design repairs, replacements, and construction of facilities/projects including roads and bridges and miscellaneous structures. Identify existing field conditions, grades, water lines, utilities, relevant features including the mechanical and electrical aspects of projects. Utilize design surveys, as-builts, topographic mapping, GIS, aerial photography, S.U.E, LIDAR and other data sources prepared by others as basemaps for design development. Develop and prepare plans, schematics, maps, drawings and graphic presentations. Prepare quantity takeoffs, cost estimates and assists with project schedules. Assist and provide support with programs and projects assigned to Professional Engineers requiring ingenuity and originality. Review and distribute engineering plans for compliance with local, state and federal regulations. Conduct field inspections and prepare punchlists for compliance with project design plans and specifications. Acquire field test reports and results of final roadway and bridge inspections for project acceptance by Transportation for maintenance and Operations.
As a Technical Specialist II, you will perform:
Prepare CADD design plans, specifications and technical provisions for roadways, intersections, signals, site development, trails, parking lots, retaining walls, non-complex structures, stormwater, utilities and related public works facilities and appurtenances. Evaluate civil engineering related problems for roadways, bridges, structures, stormwater, bike/ped facilities, water, sewer and other utilities and develops creative design solutions. Utilize FDOT Green Book, Design Manual, Structures Manual, Drainage Manual, Plans Preparation Manual, MUTCD, AASHTO, Sarasota County Unified Development Code (UDC) and other technical standards needed to prepare design concepts and construction plan sets. Prepare cost estimates and summary of quantities utilizing Sarasota County data base, FDOT pay items, Long Range Estimating (LRE) and other Unit Price software as needed for budgeting and procurement of materials. Utilize design surveys, as-builts, topographic mapping, GIS, aerial photography, S.U.E, LIDAR and other data sources prepared by others as basemaps for design development. Utilize traffic studies, technical reports, geotechnical information and other Traffic Engineering data including Sight Distance Investigations, Traffic Control Devices, Speed limit, Parking Prohibition and other data as inputs for design. Review and develop construction plans of projects impacting traffic operations or traffic control devices referred by Transportation Planning, Land Development Services, Traffic Enginering and Capital Projects. Final roadway field inspection for project acceptance and turnover by/to Public Works for operations & maintenance. Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Plans, design and review for public events, road closures, and for road projects referred by Land Development Services, Capital Projects and Utilities. Prepare conceptual and/or final stormwater pond, piping and drainage design in conjunction with Public Works Stormwater Engineers and staff. Utilize ICPR software outputs, prepared by others, as a basis for stormwater design. Coordinate and confer with other departments, technical specialists and engineers as required.

About You To thrive in this position, you must have-
Technical Specialist I: Starting Pay Range: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00/ annually, based on experience.
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Civil Engineering, construction, or related engineering field. -OR- An equivalent combination of education and experience or technical, engineering-related project experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the degree. A valid Florida driver's license at the time of hire.
Technical Specialist II: Starting Pay Range: $61,734.40 - $73,000.00/ annually, based on experience.
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Civil Engineering OR related engineering field AND two (2) years of professional civil engineering experience. -OR- a master’s degree in civil engineering OR related engineering field AND one (1) year of professional civil engineering experience. -OR- An equivalent combination of education and experience or technical, engineering-related project experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the degree. A valid Florida drivers license at the time of hire.
Preferred "BONUS" Qualifications:
CAD Civil 3D software, FDOT design criteria and Plans Preparation. AutoCADD, Microsoft Office Suite; MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Outlook. Familiarity with Microsoft Project (scheduling) and/or Project Management software is desired. Advanced Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) certification. Experience with Asset management software. Professional Engineer (P.E.) Certificate or Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate from the State of Florida. Familiarity with Cartegraph.
